Fire protection for Yarralumla – hydrants on our bush boundaries

12 February 2025

Did you know that there are numerous fire hydrants located around our suburb? The familiar red fire hydrants are largely a thing of the past. These days hydrants are in-ground and identified only by nondescript square metal panels on verges by the road. The location of these hydrants should be identified by a blue reflector in the centre of the road and/or the letters FH on the kerb. Both the FH and the blue reflector show which side of the road the hydrant is located.

A YRA review of fire hydrants along the roads on our bush boundaries found a significant number of the metal covers were concealed by grass, gardens, and overgrown weeds. Others needed to be better marked. They needed kerb markers or blue on-road reflectors either installed or replaced.

Fast access to fire hydrants may be critical should a fire occur at or close to your property. We ask all residents to check for fire hydrants on or near their property and, if necessary, to clear the surrounding ground so that the cover is visible.  You can contact the association for assistance if you are physically unable to do this yourself.  The photos below are examples of hydrants covered by gardens.  Please email YRA if you are unable to clear the hydrant at your property and need assistance.
